Foundation Announces Channel Islands Education Alliance
A five-year, £4.2 million commitment unites schools, employers, and universities to expand STEM pathways for island students.
Private Philanthropy · Channel Islands
The Clements Family Foundation channels principled capital into education, health, culture, and resilient communities—anchored in Jersey with reach across the British Isles and beyond.
Our Mission
We deploy patient philanthropic capital to strengthen civil society, widen opportunity, and preserve cultural heritage for communities that lack access to institutional resources.
Every initiative is evaluated against rigorous outcome frameworks developed with independent advisors. We favour multi-year partnerships over transactional grants, believing sustained relationships yield measurable transformation.
Vision & Values
We treat entrusted resources as a legacy obligation, prioritising transparency and long-horizon thinking in allocation and reporting.
Beneficiaries are partners in design, not subjects of charity. Programmes amplify agency and local leadership at every stage.
We hold ourselves to institutional standards of governance, due diligence, and impact measurement comparable to leading global foundations.
About Us
Established by the Clements family in 1987, the Foundation emerged from a conviction that private wealth carries a reciprocal duty to society. Headquartered on the Esplanade in St. Helier, we maintain deep ties to the Channel Islands while operating programmes that address systemic challenges across the United Kingdom and selected international jurisdictions.
Our endowment model ensures independence from political cycles, allowing trustees to pursue evidence-based interventions in education equity, preventive health, and cultural preservation without compromise.
Heritage
Foundation incorporated in Jersey with an initial mandate focused on Channel Islands education bursaries.
First multi-year community development partnership launched in partnership with municipal councils.
Health & Wellbeing portfolio established following independent sector review.
International grants programme expanded to include arts conservation and youth leadership exchanges.
Published inaugural integrated impact report aligned with global philanthropy disclosure standards.
Leadership
"Philanthropy at its best is disciplined hope—investing where evidence meets empathy, and staying long enough to see results."
The Board remains committed to prudent growth of our programmes while honouring the founding family's intent: to leave communities stronger than we found them.
— Board of Trustees, Clements Family Foundation
Strategy
Expand access to STEM pathways, vocational training, and university bursaries for underrepresented students across the Channel Islands and UK coastal communities.
Fund preventive care, mental health integration, and community clinic infrastructure in underserved regions.
Preserve heritage collections, support emerging artists, and widen public access to cultural institutions.
Invest in coastal resilience, renewable community energy, and environmental education for youth leaders.
Endowment
Our endowment is managed under responsible investment principles that balance long-term growth with ethical exclusions. The Investment Committee reports to the Board quarterly on performance, risk, and alignment with Foundation values.
Grantmaking
Our grantmaking cycle follows a transparent four-stage process designed to maximise accountability and learning.
Organisations submit expressions of interest aligned with published priority areas. Initial screening assesses eligibility and strategic fit.
Independent reviewers evaluate governance, financial health, and theory of change. Site visits conducted where appropriate.
Multi-year agreements include milestone reporting, co-designed KPIs, and access to Foundation advisory networks.
Post-grant evaluations inform portfolio strategy and are summarised in our public impact disclosures.
Programs
Local grants strengthen neighbourhood infrastructure, food security networks, and social enterprise incubators. We prioritise initiatives led by residents with demonstrated community buy-in.
Grants range from £15,000 to £250,000 annually, with preference for projects demonstrating co-funding and volunteer engagement metrics.
Education
The Clements Scholars Programme awards merit- and need-based bursaries to students pursuing higher education, apprenticeships, and professional certifications. Cohort mentoring connects recipients with industry leaders across finance, medicine, and public service.
Health
Mobile and fixed-site clinics delivering primary care to rural and island populations.
Integrated counselling services embedded in schools and workplace wellness programmes.
Public health campaigns targeting diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and maternal health.
Culture
We fund museum digitisation, touring exhibitions, and artist residencies that connect Jersey's cultural narrative to wider British and European audiences.
Environment
Coastal habitat restoration, marine research fellowships, and community-led recycling infrastructure form the core of our environmental portfolio—aligned with Jersey's sustainability framework.
Youth
The Emerging Leaders Fellowship places young professionals in cross-sector rotations with grantee organisations, government agencies, and cultural institutions.
Twelve-month placements with stipend and executive mentorship.
Design-thinking workshops addressing local policy challenges.
Pairing students with trustees and sector experts quarterly.
Global Reach
Select grants extend to Commonwealth nations and EU cultural exchange programmes, always in collaboration with accredited local implementing partners. Geographic focus is reviewed annually by the International Committee.
Impact
Independent evaluators audit programme data annually. Below reflects consolidated results from the most recent reporting period.

Partners
We work alongside universities, hospitals, museums, and community trusts that share our standards for governance and impact reporting.
Collaborative grants combine Foundation resources with co-investment from corporate and public partners, multiplying reach without diluting accountability.
Governance
The Foundation operates under a Jersey charitable trust structure with a Board of Trustees meeting quarterly. Investment policy, grant approvals above threshold, and strategic plan adoption require supermajority consent.
Committees include Audit & Risk, Programmes, Investment, and Nominations—each with published charters available in our resource library.
Board
Seven trustees oversee strategy, fiduciary duty, and compliance. Members bring expertise in finance, law, medicine, education, and the arts, with staggered terms to ensure continuity.
Non-voting advisors provide sector intelligence on health policy, curriculum design, and conservation science to inform programme design without governing authority.
Responsible investment guidelines exclude sectors inconsistent with Foundation values while targeting long-term endowment growth to sustain grantmaking capacity.
